Salinas Valley State Prision has received silver-level certification from the U.S. Green Building Council Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program for new design and construction.  LEED certification is determined by a point system which ranks a facility for water, waste and energy conservation and management.  The new prison project (actually a mental health facility for inmates) is expected to reduce water usage by 56%, energy use wil be improved by 37% over similar facilities and sewage will be improved by almost 70% over other facilities.  LEED certification is not just good green public relations. These conservation measures will result in real financial savings to the state.
